11.2 DATA TRANSFER COPROCESSOR (DTC)

11.2.1 Introduction

The Data Transfer Coprocessor is a Universal Se-

rial/Parallel Communications Interface. By means

of software plug-ins provided by STMicroelectron-

ics, the user can configure the ST7 to handle a

wide range of protocols and physical interfaces

such as:

– 8 or 16-bit IDE mode Compact Flash

– Multimedia Card (MMC protocol)

– SmartMediaCard

– Secure Digital Card

Support for different devices or future protocol

standards does not require changing the micro-

controller hardware, but only installing a different

software plug-in.

Once the plug-in (up to 256 bytes) stored in the

ROM or FLASH memory of the ST7 device is load-

ed in the DTC RAM, and that the DTC operation is

started, the I/O ports mapped to the DTC assume

specific alternate functions.

11.2.2 Functional Description

The block diagram is shown in Figure 38. The

main function of the DTC is to quickly transfer data

between :

USB and ST7 I/O ports

in between ST7 I/O ports

The protocol used to read or write from the I/O port

is defined by the S/W plug-in in the DTC RAM.
