Variousoscillatoroptionsoffertheuserawiderangeoffunctionsaccordingtotheirvarious

applicationrequirements.Theflexiblefeaturesoftheoscillatorfunctionsensurethatthebest

optimisationcanbeachievedintermsofspeedandpowersaving.Oscillatorselectionsandoperation

areselectedthroughsomeregisters.

Oscillator Overview

Inadditiontobeingthesourceofthemainsystemclocktheoscillatorsalsoprovideclocksources

fortheWatchdogTimerandTimeBaseInterrupts.Externaloscillatorsrequiringsomeexternal

componentsaswellasfullyintegratedinternaloscillators,requiringnoexternalcomponents,are

providedtoformawiderangeofbothfastandslowsystemoscillators.Thehigherfrequency

oscillatorsprovidehigherperformancebutcarrywithitthedisadvantageofhigherpower

requirements,whiletheoppositeisofcoursetrueforthelowerfrequencyoscillators.Withthe

capabilityofdynamicallyswitchingbetweenfastandslowsystemclock,thesedeviceshavethe

flexibilitytooptimizetheperformance/powerratio,afeatureespeciallyimportantinpowersensitive

portableapplications.

Therearefourmethodsofgeneratingthesystemclock,twohighspeedoscillatorsandtwolow

speedoscillators.Thehighspeedoscillatorsaretheexternalcrystal/ceramicoscillator,HXT,and

theinternal4/8/12MHzRCoscillator,HIRC.Thetwolowspeedoscillatorsaretheinternal32kHz

RCoscillatorandtheexternal32.768kHzcrystaloscillator.Selectingwhethertheloworhigh

speedoscillatorisusedasthesystemoscillatorisimplementedusingtheCKS2~CKS0bitsinthe

SCCregisterandasthesystemclockcanbedynamicallyselected.Itisnotpossibletochooseano-

oscillatorselectionforeitherthehighorlowspeedoscillator.
