Atasubroutinecallorinterruptacknowledgesignal,thecontentsoftheProgramCounterarepushed ontothestack.Attheendofasubroutineoraninterruptroutine,signaledbyareturninstruction, RETorRETI,theProgramCounterisrestoredtoitspreviousvaluefromthestack.Afteradevice reset,theStackPointerwillpointtothetopofthestack. Ifthestackisfullandanenabledinterrupttakesplace,theinterruptrequestflagwillberecorded buttheacknowledgesignalwillbeinhibited.WhentheStackPointerisdecremented,byRETor RETI,theinterruptwillbeserviced.Thisfeaturepreventsstackoverflowallowingtheprogrammer tousethestructuremoreeasily.However,whenthestackisfull,aCALLsubroutineinstructioncan stillbeexecutedwhichwillresultinastackoverflow.Precautionsshouldbetakentoavoidsuch caseswhichmightcauseunpredictableprogrambranching.Ifthestackisoverflow,thefirstProgram Countersaveinthestackwillbelost.
