Entering the IDLE2 Mode
ThereisonlyonewayforthedevicetoentertheIDLE2Modeandthatistoexecutethe“HALT”
instructionintheapplicationprogramwiththeFHIDENbitinSCCregisterequalto“1”andthe
FSIDENbitinSCCregisterequalto“0”.Whenthisinstructionisexecutedundertheconditions
describedabove,thefollowingwilloccur:
• ThefHclockwillbeonwhilethefSUBclockwillbeoffandtheapplicationprogramwillstopat
the"HALT"instruction.
• TheDataMemorycontentsandregisterswillmaintaintheirpresentcondition.
• TheI/Oportswillmaintaintheirpresentconditions.
• Inthestatusregister,thePowerDownflag,PDF,willbesetandtheWatchdogtime-outflag,TO,
willbecleared.
• TheWDTwillbeclearedandresumecountingiftheWDTfunctionisenabled.IftheWDTis
disabledthenWDTwillbeclearedandstopped.
Standby Current Considerations
AsthemainreasonforenteringtheSLEEPorIDLEModeistokeepthecurrentconsumptionofthe
devicetoaslowavalueaspossible,perhapsonlyintheorderofseveralmicro-ampsexceptinthe
IDLE1andIDLE2Mode,thereareotherconsiderationswhichmustalsobetakenintoaccountby
thecircuitdesignerifthepowerconsumptionistobeminimised.Specialattentionmustbemade
totheI/Opinsonthedevice.Allhigh-impedanceinputpinsmustbeconnectedtoeitherafixed
highorlowlevelasanyfloatinginputpinscouldcreateinternaloscillationsandresultinincreased
currentconsumption.Thisalsoappliestodeviceswhichhavedifferentpackagetypes,astheremay
beunboundedpins.Thesemusteitherbesetupasoutputsorifsetupasinputsmusthavepull-high
resistorsconnected.
Caremustalsobetakenwiththeloads,whichareconnectedtoI/Opins,whicharesetupasoutputs.
Theseshouldbeplacedinaconditioninwhichminimumcurrentisdrawnorconnectedonlyto
externalcircuitsthatdonotdrawcurrent,suchasotherCMOSinputs.Alsonotethatadditional
standbycurrentwillalsoberequirediftheLIRCorLXToscillatorhasenabled.
IntheIDLE1andIDLE2Modethehighspeedoscillatorison,ifthesystemoscillatorisfromthe
highspeedoscillator,theadditionalstandbycurrentwillalsobeperhapsintheorderofseveral
hundredmicro-amps.
Wake-up
TominimisepowerconsumptionthedevicecanentertheSLEEPorIDLEMode,wheretheCPU
willbeswitchedoff.However,whenthedeviceiswokenupagain,itcantakeaconsiderabletime
fortheoriginalsystemoscillatortorestart,stabiliseandallownormaloperationtoresume.
AfterthesystementerstheSLEEPorIDLEModes,itcanbewokenupfromoneofvarioussources
listedasfollows:
• Anexternalreset
• AnexternalfallingedgeonPortA
• Asysteminterrupt
• AWDToverflow
Ifthesystemiswokenupbyanexternalreset,thedevicewillexperienceafullsystemreset,
however,ifthedeviceiswokenupbyaWDToverflow,aWatchdogTimerresetwillbeinitiated.
Althoughbothofthesewake-upmethodswillinitiatearesetoperation,theactualsourceofthe
wake-upcanbedeterminedbyexaminingtheTOandPDFflags.ThePDFflagisclearedbya
